According to Turkstat report entitled “Waste Disposal and Recovery Facilities Statistics” some 985 waste disposal and recovery facilities were in operation in 2014.
Waste Disposal and Recovery Facilities Survey was applied to all waste disposal and recovery facilities having a license or a temporary license, and, regardless of license, to controlled landfill sites, incineration plants and composting plants operated by or on behalf of municipalities.
According to survey results, a total of 985 facilities, 117 of which were waste disposal facilities and 868 of which were recovery facilities were in operation in 2014.
In 113 controlled landfill sites having a total capacity of 620 million m3, 41 million tons of waste was disposed of. Moreover, in 45 sterilization facilities having a total capacity of 192 thousand tons/year, 67 thousand tons of medical waste was sterilized. After sterilization, some 68 percent of medical waste was disposed of in controlled landfill sites and 32 percent was disposed of in municipal dumping sites.
While amount of waste disposed of in incineration plants was 43 thousand tons, thousand tons was hazardous and three thousand tons was non-hazardous, among wastes disposed of in four incineration plants having a total capacity of 111 thousand tons/year.
Amount of waste recovered in recovery facilities was 20 million tons
In four composting facilities having a total capacity of 310 thousand tons/year, 94 thousand tons of waste was processed and 34 thousand tons of compost was produced.
Furthermore, in 39 co-incineration plants having waste recovery licenses, 532 thousand tons of waste was incinerated with energy recovery. In other 825 licensed recovery facilities, a total amount of 19 million tons of waste metal, plastic, paper, mineral etc. was recovered.
