NATO invites Montenegro amid 'instability' warnings from Russia
NATO has invited Balkan state of Montenegro to join the UN-led military organization, while the move followed Russia's successive warnings on the issue.

The decision was announced at the meeting at the alliance headquarters in Brussels, on Dec 2. “We congratulate Montonegro… This is the beginning of a very beautiful alliance” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.

NATO Secretary-General defined the decision a “historic” step. The move will allow Montonegro become the 29th member of the NATO, if the country accepts the invitation.

Russia has been warning against a potential NATO membership request, defining it as a threat to stability in the western Balkans.

The parliament in Montonegro has voted country's accession to NATO and the resolution to support the accession has passed by 50 votes out of 79. The opposition has called for a national referandum.

The state with a population of only 650 thousand owns a small military of around 2,000 active officers.
